Most of the time, energy bills are the same from month to month each season, with only a few dollars difference. When there is an increase, most people can trace it to an increase in usage or notice from the energy provider that there would be a rate increase. If you discover a sudden spike in energy bills without a corresponding usage increase or rate increase, this may be a red flag that your HVAC system is operating inefficiently. Common culprits may include dirty air filters, refrigerant leaks, or malfunctioning components that cause the system to work harder to maintain the desired temperatures. Frequent Cycling

You may not need an energy bill to tell you the system is working overtime. If you suddenly notice that your system is constantly running, this may indicate one of the culprits mentioned above or others. Excessive cycling, where the HVAC system frequently turns on and off, can indicate various issues, such as thermostat problems, inadequate airflow, or refrigerant leaks. This constant cycling strains the system and compromises comfort and energy efficiency. Professional diagnosis and repair are necessary to identify and address the underlying cause.

Unit Blows Hot Air

If the system blows hot air when it is set to cool or cold air when it is set to heat, this is a sign that something isn’t right with the system. It could be a lack of refrigerant, a thermostat problem, or another issue. Thermostat Isn’t Working

Whether the thermostat won’t turn on, won’t adjust the temperature, or doesn’t seem to be communicating with the system at all, a nonworking thermostat means that your HVAC system won’t work properly, if it works at all. The HVAC system requires input from a properly working thermostat to control the temperature inside the house or commercial space accurately.

Before calling for repairs, check the thermostat to see if it requires batteries. If it does and after changing the batteries, you still can’t get it to work right, you’ll need to have a technician diagnose the problem and make the necessary repairs.

Refrigerant Leaks

Refrigerant leaks are always a problem, but they can be a serious issue if the HVAC system is older and uses freon, as freon is poisonous. A refrigerant leak will result in moisture around the unit. However, moisture around the unit can also be from a blocked or clogged condensate drain, so it is important to contact a professional to confirm and repair the cause of the moisture.

High Humidity

While most people understand an HVAC system’s primary purpose is to cool the air in a house or commercial space, it also serves another purpose: to dehumidify. This is important as indoor humidity can lead to constantly damp surfaces, which can cause mold and mildew. If you notice the humidity rising indoors, your HVAC system may need repairs.

Systems Older Than a Decade or Frequent Issues

While it would be nice to install an HVAC system that would have a life as long as the home is cooling, the fact is these systems have a much shorter life span than our houses. Typically, you’ll realize that an HVAC system is at the end of its lifespan because it will begin to have frequent issues. Frequent issues may also be an indication of a defective system. If your system has frequent issues, it may be best to discuss replacing it with an experienced and knowledgeable technician. While installing a new HVAC system can be expensive, it is usually less costly than constantly repairing issues cropping up with an existing unit.

Update: 06/30/26- I am pleased with Aztil, from the service reps, to the technicians (Michael and others),they are incredibly customer friendly, accommodating and very respectful of our home. Michael detailed explanations of service recommendations from his last service call prompted my service request for him. Job was expertly completed with no additional concerns. Pictures of what was done and parts replaced were emailed to me for my review. Keep up the good work, Aztil!
Paul came to check the A/C compressor and handler. Took pictures and showed me. Both units were disgustng.. He gave me the amt of replacing. I Absolutely agreed. Then Neraldo and another Technician came and installed the AC units. Next Jordan and Adrian came and cleaned all vents and ducts. All 5 of them were excellent and friendly. Also gave me the info on what was being done. 5 stars for each one of them. Highly recommend I have had a Dual Inverter installed in my back room. Jorge did the install and was Terrific. He worked his butt off and in the heat. David his helper was on the go the whole time. This is my 2nd AC install with Aztil AC and I would Highly reccommend them. They are polite, efficient, and hard workers. Thank you So Much Jorge and David. If I could go over 5 I would give you 10 stars.

I had just returned home after having back surgery and after walking in my front door, I found the inside of my home warmer than normal. Now I will admit , I do keep my AC set at 72 but when I checked my thermostat, it was showing the interior temperature to be at 79 degrees which was definitely quite noticeable. I then did the normal checks to make sure that everything was running and everything appeared normal but the house was just not cooling. I called my “GO-TO” company Aztil I explained my situation. I feared that I would have to wait a few days for a tech when the representative told me that he could have a tech at my home within an hour. Sure enough, almost an hour later, the technician, Michael, showed up. Let me say that he was absolutely fantastic. I explained what was going on and he went right to work. He checked everything possible from the inside air handler, the outside unit, Freon levels, capacitors and even went up in the attic to check on all of the ductwork. Everything seems to be working fine until he made a decision to check the actual thermostat itself. After removing and making attempts to reset the system , he determined the thermostat was bad and needed to be replaced. He had a new one in his company truck that he retrieved and replaced the old one. Once that was done, my ac kicked on and within an hour, I was back to my favorite temperature. Thanks Michael for an outstanding job and definitely went over everything possible to make sure my ac was running great. A big shout out to Aztil for such great service and having the ability to send out a technician on the same I made the call . Your company and your techs are truly the best!
